The Outbreak of Acute Viral Hepatitis in Nurses


Abstract
For many years acute viral hepatitis has been recognized as an important occupational risk among medical personnel, and an interest in acute viral hepatitis as an occupational risk has increased among nurses.
The outbreak of acute viral hepatitis in nurses of three hospitals in Gwang-ju city was investigated from January 1977 to December 1982.
The results were obtained as follows ;
1. Among thirty-three cases of acute viral hepatitis in medical personnel, 20 were nurses, 7 doctors, 3 clinical laboratory technicians, 2 physical therapists and 1 pharmacist
2. The annual incidence of acute viral hepatitis in nurses of Chonnam National University Hospital was 1.3% in which the annual incidence was studied.
3. The positivity of HBsAg of acute viral hepatitis in nurses was 7 out of 17 cases checkedd for HBsAg. In the screening test for HBsAg in health medical personnel in Chonnam National University Hospital in 1982, HBsAg was positive in 18.2 % of clinical laboratory technicians, 5.3 % in doctors, 5.0 % in nurses.
4. The distribution of acute viral hepatitis was highest in nurses who worked in operating theatre and intensive care unit as 15%. It was 2.3 times higher in those worked in surgical field (9 cases) than in those worked in medical field (4 cases).
5. Concerning the duration of service, 19 cases out of 20 cases of acute viral hepatitis in nurses were broken out in the first 2.5 years. Forty-five percent of 20 cases was broken out in the first year, 25% in 1 to 1.5 years, 10% in 1.5 to 2 years, 15% in 2 to 2.5 years, 5 % in 2.5 to 4 years
